The value of building permits took a bit of a breather in September, and settled in at about $5.7 billion.  The decline is 2.5% from August 2006 figures. 

Regardless of the decline, building permits for September are still recorded as the third highest monthly level ever.  As is becoming a bit of the norm over the recent past, Alberta has been one of the largest contributors. 

Most of the decline occurred in the residential sector, as building permits in the non-residential sector remained virtually unchanged, slipping only 0.3% to $2.2 billion.

The value of building permits fell in six provinces with the largest declines in Ontario and British Columbia.  The value of intentions was up in Prince Edward Island, and the three Prairie provinces.  The largest gain in permit values occurred in Alberta where $1.3 billion worth of permits were taken out, another record high.

The October building permit estimate will be released on December 6.
